Our physical DNA consists of many genes, whose variations are called alleles. For example, we all have the gene for eye color, but variations of the gene mean that some of us may have blue eyes, or brown eyes, or even green eyes. The gene is consistent, but its physical expression varies.
Similarly, with our spiritual DNA, there are ‘genes’ or truths about our identity that is consistent with each one of us. In 1 Peter 2:9, we are told that we are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation and God’s special possession. We are truly valued and treasured by God. King David ponders this in Psalms 8:4-5, wondering how man was made a little lower than the angels, crowned in glory and honor and given dominion over the earth. That is you and me. That is how cherished we are by God.
And just like our physical DNA, our spiritual DNA contains the secret sauce or the ‘alleles’ that make us unique. It refers to our gifts that have been placed inside of us to prepare us for all that we are called to do. For example, someone may be gifted to teach while someone else is gifted to draw, but both are fulfilling their purpose – to educate. Or both may be gifted to teach, but the way in which it is done is different.

The key to discovering our spiritual DNA is by seeking the one who formed us. In Psalm 139, we are told that our frame, our design, is hidden in Him and that as we stay close and abide in Him, we find ourselves. He reveals us to us and shows us who we are in Him. We understand more of how we were formed in the womb. We can embrace our identity and walk in our purpose.
So, are you curious about the real you? Let’s spend time in His presence and allow Him to unfold our spiritual DNA right before our very eyes.
